Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) disfrutó de gran fama en sus dos visitas a los Estados Unidos, cuando los museos norteamericanos compitieron por hacerse con sus exposiciones monográficas en 1909 y 1911, y la adquisición de sus obras era motivo de orgullo para las colecciones públicas y privadas. Este volumen estudia el entramado de relaciones personales que sustentaron aquella fascinación colectiva por Sorolla, el artista español más admirado fuera de España a comienzos del siglo XX. Varios tipos de personajes participaron esta exitosa historia: sus primeros clientes en aquel país, que presentaron sus compras en público para dar a conocer a Sorolla entre sus compatriotas, los directores de los recién creados museos de Saint Louis, Buffalo y Chicago, que organizaron las exposiciones multitudinarias y los actos sociales relacionados con la estancia del pintor en estas ciudades, grandes coleccionistas y mecenas como Archer M. Huntington –quien no sólo acogió la legendaria exposición neoyorquina en la Hispanic Society, sino que asumió la mayor parte de los gastos de su gira triunfal americana– y Thomas Fortune Ryan, otro entusiasta del maestro español, del que llegó a poseer al menos 29 cuadros. Sorolla tuvo relación profesional y amistad con varios pintores norteamericanos: John Singer Sargent, su mentor en Londres, William Merritt Chase, con quien trató como colega, los principiantes Cadwallader L. Washburn y a William E.B. Starkweather, alumnos en su estudio madrileño y luego agentes de su viaje transatlántico, Louis Comfort Tiffany, que posó para él cuando en la cima de su brillante carrera como diseñador, sin olvidar a Raimundo de Madrazo, que había precedido a Sorolla como retratista de la alta sociedad americana de finales del siglo XIX. Este conjunto de figuras permite explicar buena parte de los encargos que Sorolla atendió en varias ciudades de los Estados Unidos, así como la venta de la inmensa mayoría de obras que llevó consigo desde España. De su circulación posterior y de los cambios en la estima por Sorolla durante más de un siglo da cuenta –como colofón a este volumen– un estudio retrospectivo de la fortuna de Sorolla en el mercado del arte, que al fin y al cabo es el termómetro de su éxito internacional.

Lucie and her father are reluctant witnesses for the prosecution, as they had met him while travelling from Calais to Dover. Lucie stresses the good qualities of the accused while imparting her testimony. The evidence against him is overwhelming as the prosecution produces a number of witnesses who swear that he is a spy.
