Martin, George R.R.

Tribal

Morrison, Michael

A renowned Columbia Business School professor and cultural psychologist explains the deep roots of tribalism--and how great leaders harness our tribal psychology to move people and change cultures for the better. We've all heard pundits bemoan the rise of tribalism, but few have offered answers about how to manage our tribal psychology to create positive change. Now pioneering cultural psychologist and acclaimed Columbia Business School professor Michael Morris decodes tribalism in this erudite but accessible and hopeful book.Ours is the only species that lives in tribes, groups glued together by their distinctive cultures that can grow to a scale far beyond kith and kin. Morris argues that our psychology is wired by evolution in three distinctive ways to enable this. First, the peer instinct to mesh with those around us, to conform to what most people do. Second, the hero instinct to give to the group, to emulate those who are most respected. Third, the ancestor instinct to maintain tradition, to follow the ways of prior generations. These tribal instincts enable us to form shared goals and work as a team, to acquire specialized skills and innovate to improve them, and to transmit the accumulated pool of cultural knowledge onward to the next generation.Countries, churches, political parties, and companies are tribes, and tribal instincts explain our loyalties to them and the hidden ways that they affect our thoughts, our actions, and our identities. Rather than deriding tribal impulses for their irrationality, great leaders tap into them. For example, Lee Kuan Yew used government officials' peer instinct to cleanse the Singaporean port of corruption. Sallie Krawcheck leveraged hero instincts to fix the strained merger between patrician Merrill Lynch and plebian Bank of America. Coaches of dynastic sports teams like the NBA's Golden State Warriors and New Zealand rugby's All Blacks rouse ancestor instincts to lead their teams to glory. The most powerful way to move people is through their ties to tribes. Policymakers across the world have tapped into these instincts to reduce unhealthy habits of consumption, promote environmental conservation, and tackle many other problems that had resisted previously attempted remedies. And managers, teachers, and activists have channeled them to transform organizations.By weaving together deep research, current and historical events, and stories from business and politics, Morris offers a counterintuitive twist to how we think about tribalism, giving us the tools to address our own tribes in a new light.

Bukowski, Charles

The Basque Witch-Hunt: A Secret History
Hoy -5% en Libros

Machielsen, Dr Jan

In June 1609, two judges left Bordeaux for a territory at the very edge of their jurisdiction, a Basque-speaking province on the Atlantic coast called the Pays de Labourd. In four months, they executed up to 80 women and men for the crime of witchcraft, causing a wave of suspects to flee into Spain and sparking terror there. Witnesses, many of them children, described lurid tales of cannibalism, vampirism, and demonic sex. One of the judges, Pierre de Lancre, published a sensationalist account of this diabolical netherworld. With other accounts seemingly destroyed, this witch-hunt – France's largest – has always been seen through de Lancre's eyes. The narrative, re-told over the centuries, is that of a witch-hunt caused by a bigoted outsider.Newly discovered evidence paints a very different, still darker picture, revealing a secret history underneath de Lancre's well-known tale. Far from an outside imposition, witchcraft was a home-grown problem. Panic had been building up over a number of years and the region was fractured by factionalism and a struggle over scarce resources. The Basque Witch-Hunt reveals that de Lancre was no outsider, he was a local partisan, married into the Basque nobility. Living at the Franco-Spanish border, the Basques were victims of geography. Geo-politics caused a local conflict which made the witch-hunt inevitable. The same forces eventually sent thousands of religious refugees from Spain to France where they, in turn, became new objects of popular fear and anger. The Basque witch-hunt is justly infamous. This book shows that almost everything historians thought they knew about it is wrong.

Beauty Is In The Street

Haberlen, Joachim C.

In post-war Europe, protest was everywhere. On both sides of the Iron Curtain, from Paris to Prague, Milan to Wroclaw, ordinary people took to the streets, fighting for a better world. Their efforts came to a head most dramatically in 1968 and 1989, when mass movements swept Europe and rewrote its history. In the decades between, Joachim C. Häberlen argues, new movements emerged that transformed the nature of protesting. Activism moved beyond traditional demonstrations, from squatting to staging 'happenings' and camping out at nuclear power plants. People protested in the way they dressed, the music they listened to, the lovers they slept with, the clubs where they danced all night. New movements were born, notably anti-racism, women's liberation, gay liberation, and environmentalism. And protest turned inward, as activists experimented with new ways of living and feeling, from communes to group therapy, in their efforts to live a better life in the here and now. Some of these struggles succeeded, others failed. But successful or not, their history provides a glimpse into roads not taken, into futures that did not happen. The stories in Häberlen's book invite us to imagine different futures, to struggle, to fail, and to try again. In a time when we are told that there are no alternatives, they show us that there could be another way.

Jacob, Christian
