Biografía de J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien, (Bloemfontein, Sudáfrica 1892 - Bournemouth, Inglaterra, 1973), escritor y lingüista británico, es conocido principalmente por su trilogía El señor de los anillos, obra de fantasía considerada todo un clásico de la literatura universal. Resultó un grandísimo éxito de crítica y público, convirtiéndose en un claro referente para toda la literatura fantástica posterior, siendo traducido a numerosos idiomas y alcanzando unas impresionantes cifras de ventas en todo el mundo. La adaptación al cine, hecha en 2001 por Peter Jackson, supuso un éxito mundial, consiguiendo el récord de Premios Oscar para una trilogía y revitalizando el estudio de la obra de Tolkien. La trilogía comparte escenario con otra de sus grandes novelas, El hobbit (1937), obra que, si bien en principio iba dedicada a un público más juvenil, consiguió la atención de un mercado más amplio. Otros títulos destacables del autor son Los cuentos inconclusos, El Silmarillion, Los hijos de Hurin o, dentro de sus cuentos infantiles, Roverandom y El herrero de Wootton Mayor.
