Biografia de J.R.R. Tolkien

J.R.R. Tolkien (Bloemfontein, Sud-àfrica 1892 - Bournemouth, Anglaterra, 1973), escriptor i lingüista britànic, és conegut principalment per la seva trilogia El senyor dels anells, obra de fantasia considerada tot un clàssic de la literatura universal. Va resultar un grandíssim èxit de crítica i públic, convertint-se en un clar referent per a tota la literatura fantàstica posterior, essent traduïda a nombrosos idiomes i aconseguint unes impressionants xifres de vendes a tot el món. L'adaptació al cinema, feta el 2001 per Peter Jackson, va suposar un èxit mundial, aconseguint el rècord de Premis Oscar per a una trilogia i revitalitzant l'estudi de l'obra de Tolkien. La trilogia comparteix escenari amb una altra de les seves grans novel·les, El hòbbit (1937), obra que, si bé en principi anava dedicada a un públic més juvenil, va aconseguir l'atenció d'un mercat més ampli.
