Described by his friend Charles Lamb as “an archangel slightly damaged”, Coleridge was deemed a towering genius by many of his contemporaries, and one who, in conversation, had no equal. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) pertenece a la primera generación de los poetas románticos ingleses, junto con su amigo William Wordsworth. Ambos se dieron a conocer con las célebres ''Baladas líricas'' (1789), donde ya se señalaban diferencias entre ellos: el uso del lenguaje coloquial en Wordsworth y la primacía de la imaginación en Coleridge.
